And so the year turns…

So it’s January! The time for me to sit on the floor surrounded by gardening books, magazines, seed packets and scrawls on notepaper in an attempt to understand what I hope we can achieve with the plot this year. A while ago I revamped the lottie, and this new plan has evolved from that.

It’s mostly the same, just a few refinements. I’ve gone into some companion planting too, so we’ll have nasturtiums, marigolds and herbs in abundance to combat pests.

The top left corner needs some work, both on the plan and on the plot. The rest of the plot is either covered in membrane after some improvement, intentionally a grass path or has some veg on it, whereas that corner is hard packed earth with no improvement, gradually being colonised by weeds and grass, even in winter weather. The asparagus needs moving – it’s not in a sensible place 😉

Most of the seeds I already have – need the potatoes, courgettes, sweetcorn, and about half of the companions. I’ve kinda let fate select our veg this year – Mum got some seeds off a man in a pub, Dad bought some others last year, I get them free from magazines, so short of those few we’ve got at least one variety of pretty much everything we want. Oh and we need a new dalek compost bin. The existing one is full and too wet – it needs turning and relayering with dry materials, so I might as well get a second bin for convenience. I’ve been looking into larger wooden slatted bins but think I’ll go with a second dalek. Or two, since the council has a buy one, get one half price deal.

Oh and I realised I made a boo-boo last year – my tomatoes failed, but at least in one variety it may have been avoidable. I read the packet of seeds today – they are determinate (bush forming) and I treated them like indeterminate (climbing) – totally different kettle of fish 😉 Hopefully better luck this year!
