We Like Tha Mooooon!

A cloudy night, a camera that whilst nice was not built for astronomical photography, and strange looks from the neighbours mean this is the best I can get. It’s four photos – there aren’t four moons tonight. The top two are just after totality and the bottom two are about an hour later. The black marks on the lower moons are branches of trees that refused to move for the photo.

This a lunar eclipse! I heard today “yeah but it’s just the same as a new moon”, and I wasn’t of a mind to get into the details. *inbuilt teacher raises it’s head* Suffice to say, a new moon is when the sun ain’t shining on the side of the moon we can see coz it’s at the wrong angle, and a lunar eclipse is when the Earth gets in the way of the light of the sun that would otherwise hit the moon.

On a similar note, I’d like to draw your attention to the Spongmonkeys’ touching accolade to the Moon – a masterpiece that is particularly poignant at this time. Marvellous…
