Pigeons, protein, and pain!

Slight age over-estimation with Squabble! As a wood pigeon (as opposed to the rock pigeon that are more commonly raised by humans as pets) when I got him he was probably only 18 days old or so, and shouldn’t be eating by himself until 35-40 days. So if he was 18 days when I got him he is only 31 days old now. I’m working on training him to eat but am not massively worried now about his lack of progress. This is him in the garden, me showing how his underfeathering is doing well now.

He is also becoming more wild, which is good for him but does make catching him to bring him in rather more challenging!

We’ve had a bit of a health fad start at work. M has lost 2 stone but is going to the gym 6 times a week and has a personal trainer, and eating air, R has lost 9lbs by a milder version of the above (calorie controlled and milder gym). I’m a little late to the party! I also fail at calorie controlled diets as I can never be bothered to count calories or points – I cook a lot from scratch and dislike working out the calories of the result and distrust the calorie count anyway, seeing as it’s usually based on a lot of assumptions. So since I liked Atkins but can’t seem to stick to it lately, instead I started the South Beach Diet last week. I need to incorporate more exercise (pretty gentle to start if you follow the plan) but am finding the diet really easy to follow. The book is ok but gosh what a lot of waffle. When it eventually gets on to the actual plans it’s great, but the first half could probably have been summed up in about two pages. So we shall see how this attempt goes. So far so good! It’s not as faddy as Atkins – essentially it requires no refined carbs and no saturated fats – lots of protein and veg, and by week 3 fruit and wholemeal grains can be reintroduced. I restarted my ticker on the right as it dated back to January and hadn’t moved 😉

I did however throw out my back on Friday – spent last week working towards a deadline, working 10 hours straight sitting at a PC. I could feel my back whinging on Thursday and then reached for something on Friday morning and *ping* gone. It’s getting better now but still very sore and immobile. Typical as I was looking forward to having a weekend post-deadline!
